Hebrews 3:12-13
Take care, brothers, that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the living God. Encourage yourselves daily while it is still “today,” so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin.Observation
We must be wary each day of falling into sin. Sin is a trap and if you don't fight it daily, it can easily overcome. This reminds me of an old native american proverb I learned in the Boy Scouts when I was a boy, I have no clue if it's a real native american proverb, that's just how it was presented to me. It goes something like this:
Everyone is born with a stone (or diamond) in their stomach with sharp edges. When you do something evil, the stone turns, causing you pain and reminding you that evil is wrong and you should stop. As the years go by, if you continue to do evil and ignoring the pain, the stone continues to turn but slowly the sharp edges wear becoming smooth. Before long, doing evil no longer hurts.
Application
Praying daily helps me to be cognizant of my sins and my failures and to ask for forgiveness. Attending Mass helps me stay faithful to God and helps me to continue down His Path. Reading scripture helps me to stay strong and encouraged. All of this helps me to not rebel against God's Will. Doing penance helps me to do good and to show how sorry I am.
Prayer
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God have mercy.
